Playa Del Carmen is a little city, located on the Yucatan peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. At the moment Playa Del Carmen is one of the fastest growing City’s in latin america and has now a population of around 150’000 people. What makes this city very interesting is the mix of people who have decided to live here. You can meet people from all over the world and of course local people. Because Playa Del Carmen has grown so much in the last 35-40 years it is still a very young city and this also means that not all of the here living Mexicans grew up here. So Playa Del Carmen is a mix of expats from different countries and Mexicans from all over the republic and everybody brings a bit of their culture from their hometown into this city.

In the center of Playa Del Carmen is the famous “la quinta” or in english the 5th avenue. This is a traffic free street which offers uncountable amounts of restaurants, shops, clubs and bars. “La Quinta” invites you to do extended shopping tours or just visit it to get a snack, a good meal or just a simple cold Mexican beer and is especially popular in the evenings. After midnight is the time for the party people and their destination is the 12th street. The 12th streets goes downwards to the beach from the 5th avenue and is packed with nightclubs, bars and discos.

The Riviera Maya which is the area between Cancun and Tulum offers a lot and there are plenty of opportunities for tours or activities. Mayan ruins for example is a very popular activity and these tours are interesting for the whole family. On the Yucatan peninsula the most famous ruins are Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba.


Get Around in Playa Del Carmen


The streets and avenues in Playa Del Carmen are built like a chessboard and this makes it super easy to get around in the city. The streets have numbers and not names like in many other city’s which makes it even easier to orientate yourself or to find out how far something is. The numbers have a simple system too. While the avenues which go parallel along the beach are marked with 5-er steps like 5,10,15 and so on, the streets which lead to or from the beach are marked with 2-er steps like 2,4,6 and so on. This is basically all you need to know to get out and explore the city of Playa Del Carmen.
